• chemistry and biochemistry of carbohydrates;
• structural analysis and biological activity of complex natural polysaccharides;
• chemical composition, using the resources of marine hydrobionts.

He is an expert in marine biological resources and also in control methods of natural substances, biotechnology of foodstuff and biologically active substances. He is an author of 318 scientific publications in these directions: articles, theses and conference proceedings. Among them 196 articles are in the journals indexed by Scopus, 212 articles are in the journals indexed by Web of Science. He is an author or co-author of 5 monographs, 2 manuals and 9 patents. 18 Ph.D. theses were successfully defended under his leading. At present she guides research study of post-graduates. He is a regular member of the organizing committee of the European Carbohydrate Symposium (EUROCARB). He was the head of the joint Russian-Vietnamese project “Sulfated Polysaccharides of Vietnam Brown Algae: Chemical Structure and Biological Activity” in 2015-2016. Repeatedly he was the research supervisor and performer of grants of the Russian Federal Property Fund and KOSEF (South Korea).
